Periodontal light treatment device

Micro-miniature circuitry and packaging creates an effective treatment for gum disease

A Sarasota, Florida company came to us with a very unique medical requirement. They had conducted considerable research on the treatment of periodontal disease using light at wavelengths in the near-infrared to infrared range. NASA and other investigators had confirmed the workability of "photo-stimulation" of human tissue. The goal was to develop a less painful treatment method for milder stages of periodontal disease.

Frisella Design engineers went to work employing our background in circuit design, flex circuitry, tight-spaced surface mount packaging and 3D rapid prototyping. The challenge was sourcing "micro-LED's" at the various necessary wavelengths, and packaging a microprocessor with just over a one-half square inch of real-estate to work with. The results are a stunning achievement of miniaturization and effectiveness.
